Epidemiologists say pneumococcal vaccination to decrease child mortality by 20%

ALMATY. KAZINFORM The country's epidemiologists urge the population to get vaccine against pneumococcal disease. The doctors state that vaccination will help reduce child mortality by 20%.

Today's conference in Almaty focused on these issues, our correspondent reports. 

"Kazakhstan launched pneumococcal vaccination the countrywide in 2010. The first regions to introduce vaccine were East Kazakhstan and Mangystau. They can state now 30% decline in morbidity rates, and 20% reduction in death from pneumonia of children aged less than 1 year," head of the epidemiological monitoring department of the scientific and practical centre of the sanitary and epidemiological expertize and monitoring Ainagul Kuatbayeva said.

According to her, Kazakhstan is the first among the former soviet republics to introduce pneumococcal vaccination.
As the World Health Organization says, above 1,6 mln people die of diseases caused by pneumococcus globally, half of them are children under five. 

Besides, Kazakhstan launched vaccination of teen girls against human papillomavirus infection to prevent cervical cancer and other anogenital diseases.
