15,500 Kazakhstanis die each year from brain attack

05 December 2014, Kazinform

"Brain attack is the second leading cause of death in Kazakhstan. 15,500 out of 49,000 registered strokes are fatal. There are 275,000 of disabled people in Kazakhstan who survived brain attack," head of the League of Neurologists public association - the Smagul Kaishibayev Institute of Neurology scientific practical centre Gulnaz Kaishibayeva said at a press conference in Almaty.

Stroke or brain attack is a disease that involves the blood vessels that supply blood to the brain.

A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that brings oxygen and nutrients to the brain ruptures or is clogged by a blood clot or some other mass.
Without adequate supply of oxygen, nerve cells of the brain can't work and die within minutes. When nerve cells can't work, the area of the body they control can't work either.
